Perimenopause and Menopause

Peri-menopause and menopause are natural occurrences in a women's life.  Chinese Medicine recognizes menopause as a change in a woman's body chemistry and a natural transitional process.  However the symptoms can be severe enough to make it feel like a disease.  The underlying cause of the symptoms is a hormone imbalance.

Because each woman is unique, her symptoms and their severity during the perimenopausal years are too.  Ideally it is relatively uneventful, but unfortunately, in our often fast-paced, stressful lifestyle, underlying patterns of disharmony give rise to the "typical" menopausal symptom complex.  High stress, emotional extremes, and lifestyle choices such as poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, and overwork cause imbalances in the body that may lead to hot flashes or other symptoms experienced throughout the day.
Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can be extremely effective in the treatment of perimenopause and menopause.  Envision the body as having a cooling moistening aspect (yin) and a hot active aspect (yang).  As we age the relative balance of yin and yang become thrown out of balance.

Acupuncturists see menopause as a transition through this period of relative imbalances, not a disease.  The symptoms associated with menopause occur when this transition becomes blocked.  These symptoms can include hot flashes, night sweats, nervousness, insomnia, vaginal dryness low libido, hypertension and high cholesterol.

The goal of acupuncture is to allow the patient to pass through this transition as quickly as possible, through natural means, without resorting to potentially risky hormone replacement therapy.  Conventionally, Western medicine has used hormone replacement therapy (HRT) as the primary treatment for menopausal symptoms. However, not all women can tolerate HRT and some experience many distressing effects.  The Journal of the American Medical Association showed that HRT might increase the risk of heart disease, breast cancer, stroke and blood clots, which prompts many women to seek complementary solutions.  Acupuncture and herbal medicine offer an alternative, safer approach to dealing with menopause without the side effects of HRT.

Herbal medicine replenishes the body’s energy reserves to restore, and regulate the bodies warming and cooling functions.  The use of both acupuncture and herbal medicine may be employed to bring the imbalanced organ systems back into balance.

We can help you:

  • Significantly Reduce hot flashes
  • Overcome fatigue and insomnia
  • Improve symptoms of depression
  • Increase your appetite
  • Improve your body's circulation and cardio-pulmonary functions
  • Regulate menstruation
  • Relieve aches and pain

"I first came to Chang Acupuncture after dealing with the issues of perimenopausal symptoms: headaches, mood swings, dizziness, night sweats and fatigue.  I started acupuncture and herbal treatments on a weekly, then bi-weekly and now,  maintenance sessions to keep the symptoms under control.  Julie is a wonderful, caring, knowledgeable, and extremely skilled acupuncturist. I would highly recommend her to anyone who is suffering with the symptoms of perimenopause."
